About the film
At the time of digital technologies, a filmmaker keeps using old Super 8 cameras. Even though they are outdated, it’s a way for him to make a personal, individual, creative and artistic work.

Mathieu Péteul : "I directed ULTIMATE SUPER 8 in 2007 after working for five years in television. I wanted to get back to something essential for me: making films! I left for Geneva, in Switzerland, with two Leicina cameras under my arm and a suitcase full of film cartridges. There I met André Dussoix, a visual artist. I asked him to play the role of an amateur filmmaker who is passionate about Super 8. He immediately agreed. ULTIMATE SUPER 8 oscillates between documentary and fiction with a mise en abyme of the cinematographic process. In the beginning, the film is presented as a false documentary (cinema-verité style). We follow André on his filmic peregrinations to his cellar, where there is a development laboratory and a projection room... Then the film moves toward the techno-thriller with the unexpected introduction of mysterious men in black (a famous figure in science fiction cinema), sent by the digital authorities to monitor the filmmaker, evaluate him and finally put him back on the right track."
André Dussoix : "Ironically, this little film has risen from the ashes. Brand new, more beautiful than before. My cat has been dead for a long time, but I am still living a new autumn, the weather is so colourful!"

À l’heure du numérique, un cinéaste amateur continue de filmer avec de vieilles cameras Super 8. Pour lui, bien qu’il s’agisse d’une méthode obsolète, il y voit la possibilité de faire un travail personnel individuel, créatif et artistique.

Notes écrites suite à la restauration du film
Mathieu Péteul : "J’ai réalisé ULTIMATE SUPER 8 en 2007 après avoir travaillé cinq années à la télévision. Je voulais revenir à quelque chose d’essentiel pour moi : faire du cinéma ! Je suis parti à Genève, Suisse, avec deux cameras Leicina sous le bras et une valise remplie de cartouches de films. J’y ai retrouvé André Dussoix, artiste plasticien. Je lui ai demandé de jouer le rôle d’un cinéaste amateur passionné de Super 8. Il a tout de suite accepté. ULTIMATE SUPER 8 oscille entre documentaire et fiction avec une mise en abyme du procédé cinématographique. Au début, le film se présente comme un faux documentaire (façon cinéma-vérité). On accompagne André dans ses pérégrinations filmiques jusque dans sa cave, où se trouve un laboratoire de développement et une salle de projection… Puis le film dérive vers le techno-thriller avec l’introduction inattendue de mystérieux hommes en noir (figure célèbre du cinéma de science-fiction), envoyés par les autorités numériques, pour surveiller le cinéaste, l’évaluer et finalement le remettre dans le droit chemin.
André Dussoix : "Ironie du temps passé, ce petit film renait de ses cendres. Tout neuf, plus beau qu’avant. Mon chat est mort depuis longtemps, mais je vis encore un nouvel automne, le temps a de ces couleurs !"
